Right Analysis, Wrong Starting Point

February 6, 2008

Perhaps Paul Mirengoff had the analysis right, but started from the wrong initial point.

He posts about what a McCain presidency would be like:

Power Line: More in anger than in sorrow — What a McCain presidency might look like

More often, the president moves away from his party’s stalwarts and in the direction of the opposition party. The “triangulating” Bill Clinton did this and so did George W. Bush with his compassionate conservatism.

I thought that might be right, but something didn’t sound correct. Then I read a post by Tigerhawk:

I cannot shake the idea that even though both parties seem set to nominate immigration softies, candidate John McCain will end up moving to the right on the issue between now and November.

Now Paul Mirengoff’s analysis sounds better. McCain will tack away from his starting point. It will be toward more conservative positions on some issues - e.g., illegal immigration - not toward more liberal positions.

There, I feel better.

Funniest Gallows Humor Line

Duanne Patterson at Townhall Blog posts the funniest gallows humor line of the night:

Our side looked like a 60th high school reunion, and their side looks like the Peace Corps.

It’s going to be a long nine months.

If I didn’t laugh, I’d cry.
