A Fascinating Interview with a Former Fundamentalist
Michael Coren interviewed Tawfik Hamid recently and posted Hot for martyrdom. It’s a fascinating view into the mind of one who has been part of that fundamentalist brand of Sunni Muslim extremism and has since foresworn it’s violence.
He has a great deal of frustration for how we in the West deal with other religions, even when their adherants are behaving badly:
He’s exasperated now, visibly angry at what he sees as a willful Western foolishness. “Stop asking what you have done wrong. Stop it! They’re slaughtering you like sheep and you still look within. You criticize your history, your institutions, your churches. Why can’t you realize that it has nothing to do with what you have done but with what they want.”At some point, we have to stop wondering why others behave as they do and defend our countries, our loved ones, and ourselves against the enemy. Sometimes the explanation will be useful in preventing future problems, but at other times, the answer will not gain us any new insight other than to see that the enemy is power hungry and will use any violence they can to achieve their ends.
After all, that was the way the Muslim Caliphate was originally established. It wasn’t by majority vote.
