Maybe Mark Steyn is Right

Paterico’s Pontifications links to a post by  David Cox at the UK’s Guardian Comment is free: Saddam: a tribute. The article is so full of absolute nonsense that Paterico calls his post "Life Outdoes the Onion," referring to the satirical web site

It would be hilarious to read the Stalinesque torturing of facts and reality if it weren’t a serious article by a seriously deranged man.

Echoing 1984-like logic, Mr. Cox opines:

Saddam would have had his work cut out to match these [death] figures. So, why are the Iraqis better off without him? The only answer available is that now they are "free". Well, we all value freedom. Some value it more than life, and those who do certainly go on about it. Nonetheless, they are probably a minority.

Living under tyranny may not be ideal, but it is not impossible. In the Soviet Union, life took on a character of its own, in which the human spirit managed to flourish in spite of the political constraints. The literature generated in those conditions can still inspire us. Today, many former Soviet citizens feel no more free under the yoke of global capitalism than they did before, and some would like to see the return of Stalinism. The people of China seem in no rush to jettison a regime that holds out the prospect of prosperity at the expense only of liberty.

"Living under tyrany may not be ideal…" hard to comment on that line. I’m not sure where to start. If he were joking, I’d think Mark Steyn had a real competitor for satirical commentary. Since he isn’t, he makes me think Mark’s predictions about Europe becoming Eurabia may come to pass. "Sharia’s not the ideal law…"

What an absolute fool. If he truly believes what he wrote, one wonders why he lives in a free society. If he doesn’t his comments are despicable. Either way the article is disgusting.
